Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are at the heart of what the BDC does. We provide training for students and coaches, we also organize, plan, and run events,  We need volunteers to help us provide meaningful programs to the K-12 students we service throughout the state of Kentucky. In addition to this page, we also provide an events calendar, which will show you our upcoming events and from there you can also see volunteer opportunities.  We truly appreciate your willingness to become a volunteer. Volunteer Opportunities

Elementary (3rd-5th): Speech and Debate Classes
[No Prior Experience Required].
Description: We need someone who can help the teacher manage 9-12 elementary students, grades 3-5. Typically a lesson is taught and the class will divide into breakout rooms of 4-6 students plus the assistant. The assistant will supervise and interact with the students helping to keep the activity productive and give positive encouragement. Activity descriptions and instructions will be provided via email well before the day of class.
       

Middle School (6-8th): Beginning Debate Class
[No Prior Experience Required].
Description: We need someone who can help the teacher manage 9-12 middle school students, grades 6-8. Typically a lesson is taught and the class will divide into breakout rooms of 4-6 students plus the assistant(s). The assistant will supervise and interact with the students helping to keep the activity productive and give positive encouragement. Activity descriptions and instructions will be provided via email well before the day of class.

Teaching Assistant

Elementary (3rd-5th) Debate Class = FRI, 4 pm, 60 min.
Friday, October 8th , 15th, 22nd and/or 29th, [No Prior Experience Required].
Description: We need someone who can help the teacher manage 9-12 elementary students, grades 3-5. Typically a lesson is taught and the class will divide into breakout rooms of 4-6 students plus the assistant. The assistant will supervise and interact with the students helping to keep the activity productive and give positive encouragement. Activity descriptions and instructions will be provided via email well before the day of class. Middle School (6-8th) Beginning & Intermediate Debate Classes
Starting the week of January 10th. 90 min per class. 6 weeks total.
[Prior Teaching/Coaching Experience Required].
Description: We need someone to manage 8-12 debate students, grades 6-8. Typically a lesson is taught and then the class will divide into breakout rooms of 4-6 students plus an assistant. The assistant will supervise and interact with the students helping to keep the activity productive and give positive encouragement. Activity descriptions and instructions must be provided via email to both the director and the assistant well before the day of class. FYI: Classes with fewer than 8 students will not be provided with an assistant.
  

High School (9-12th) Beginning & Intermediate Debate Classes

Judging: BDC's "New Year's Resolution"
Friday, January 7, 2022, 5-7:30pm.
[No Prior Experience Required / MS & HS Students = Allowed to Judge!].
Description: We need people who can help judge (and supervise) some elementary and middle school debates. We can provide a short tutorial -- the main thing is that the judge listens, takes light notes, and makes a fair-minded decision (you don't have to be a debate professional for these debates). Experienced judges are definitely welcome!

[No Prior Experience Required].
Description: We need people who can help supervise (and possibly judge) some elementary and middle school debates. "Team moms" would be greatly appreciated!
